Replay a sentence with word-by-word highlighting

While the video is paused on a card you can hear the sentence again as often as you like — the way the native speaker said it, and the way it sounds in your language — and watch the words light up as they are spoken.

Replay Original and Translation

The bottom bar of the card has two replay buttons:

  • Original replays the sentence exactly as it was heard, cut from the audio of your video. The clip starts where the sentence really started, so the first words aren’t clipped.
  • Translation replays the spoken translation. It is there whenever Speak translations aloud is on.

While a clip plays, its button fills from left to right with the playback progress. Click the playing button to stop; the next click starts again from the beginning.

Follow along: the word-by-word highlight

Whenever audio plays — the first live playback of the spoken translation, or either replay — the matching text lights up in step with it, like lyrics in a music app: the part already spoken is bright, the rest is dimmed, and it advances a whole word at a time. Long sentences become easy to follow, and you can see exactly which sound belongs to which word.

It is on by default. Turn it off or on under Settings then Overlay then Main overlay then Replay then Highlight text during replay. The same highlight works when you replay saved sentences on the Dashboard.

Redo a take

Each replay button has a small ↻ attached to it:

  • ↻ next to Original — “Redo the breakdown”: asks again for the translation, vocabulary and grammar of the same sentence.
  • ↻ next to Translation — “Redo the spoken translation”: asks for a new spoken take, for the rare time the voice stumbled or cut off.

Both work on the sentence that is showing, and they keep working while the session is suspended.

Replays are saved

Both clips are stored with the sentence, so every card you finished can be replayed later — highlight included — from the Dashboard’s Sessions page. See Your study history.
