First run

Four steps to your first sentence.

  1. Open the app

Move RainbowSay to Applications and open it. It lives in your menu bar, and a small card floats near the bottom of the screen — over any app, fullscreen video included.

  2. Sign in with Google

The card shows one button. It opens your browser; sign in, then come back to the app. Your free starter credit is already there — no card, no API keys. Came from a friend’s invitation? Sign in with the same Google account you accepted it with.

  3. Allow audio

macOS asks for each permission the first time it’s needed, and the card tells you if one is missing. You’ll find them all in System Settings → Privacy & Security.

    • System Audio Recording OnlyListening and Subtitles

Lets RainbowSay hear what your Mac is playing. It is audio only: the app has no screen recording, and never asks for it.

    • MicrophoneSpeaking

Asked for the first time you start a Speaking session, or choose the microphone as the source for Subtitles. Listening never needs it.

    • AccessibilityListening and Speaking

Lets the app pause your player at the end of a sentence and use the spacebar as a shortcut. On macOS 27 and later the pane is called Device Control and Data Access. If macOS doesn’t list the app, add it with the + button under Privacy & Security → Accessibility.

  4. Press Start and play something

Choose Listening, press Start, and play a show, a video or a podcast in any app. At the end of the first sentence the card unpacks it and pauses the player for you. Press Continue, and the story goes on.
