The fine print, in large print
What does “up to” mean?
Each number is what the whole allowance covers if you spent it on that one thing. Most weeks are a mix — an episode with Listening on Tuesday, subtitles over a film on Friday — and the allowance simply drains a little with each.
Spoken translations
The Listening numbers assume every translation is also read aloud to you. Turn “Speak translations aloud” off in Settings for text-only cards, and the same allowance stretches further.
Long sentences and chat
A long, winding sentence uses a little more than a short one, and so does each question you ask in the chat about it.
Microphone time
Speaking is measured in minutes of microphone audio, not minutes the session is open. With push-to-talk, that means only while you hold the key.
Subtitle languages
Subtitles are measured per minute of audio, for each language on screen, quiet moments included. When nothing plays for about ten seconds the app stops streaming, so a paused video doesn’t drain your allowance.

These are estimates from real sessions, rounded down, and we’ll refine them as we measure more. On a paid plan the app shows how much of the month’s allowance you’ve used as a percentage, under Settings → Provider → Usage & plan, so you’re never guessing.
Add-on credit
A big month? Top up instead of upgrading.
On Pro and Max, when the month’s allowance is used up the app offers add-on credit, so an exam week or a twelve-episode weekend doesn’t have to wait for the reset.

What happens when my allowance runs out?
New sessions stop starting, and a session that is running winds down gracefully — your history is kept. On Pro and Max the app then offers add-on credit, or you can wait for the monthly reset; on Free, you pick a plan. Nothing is ever charged automatically: there are no overage fees.
How does yearly billing work?
You pay once for the year and two months are on us: twelve months for the price of 10 — that is the 17% saving. Your allowance still arrives monthly, the same amount as on monthly billing, and resets every month of the year.
Can I cancel any time?
Yes. In the app, open Settings → Provider → Manage plan: it opens Stripe’s billing portal, where you can cancel, change plan, update your card and download invoices. After cancelling you keep your plan until the end of the period you paid for, then move to Free. Your study history stays on your Mac either way.
What if I switch plans?
Upgrades take effect immediately: you’re charged the price difference and start with the new plan’s full allowance right away. Downgrades take effect at the end of the period you’ve already paid for.
Can I get a refund?
If something went wrong, email [email protected] and tell us what happened. A person reads every message and we’ll work it out with you.
Is there a student or teacher discount?
Not a discount — something simpler. Students, teachers and creators can email [email protected] from a school address, or with a link to a public profile, and we’ll add extra free credit so there is time to really try RainbowSay before deciding on a plan.
